Although his career appeared to be legendary and peerless, he faced multiple episodes of depression and anxiety, especially after his Olympic appearances. He first suffered from anxiety after the 2004 Olympic Games, and the episodes also continued after the 2012 London edition, where he bagged four gold and two silver medals. After the Games, he entered a brief period of depression, where he also contemplated suicide. However, he returned to the Games in 2014 to compete in his last Olympics in 2016. Throughout his difficult period, Johnson gave her steadfast support, on which Phelps reflected in an interview with Today.com. He said that her support brought them together.“Nicole loves me and wants to help. She wants me to get better,” Phelps said. “But she’s also struggling herself. She needs that support as well. I know it’s hard for her. I feel like Nicole and I are closer than ever.”Michael Phelps also experienced depression after finally retiring in 2016.
