Wilson was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and started playing hockey at age two on a backyard rink built by his father, according to reports. He played minor hockey for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens and scored 105 points in his final minor season before joining the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Wilson was selected 27th overall by the Plymouth Whalers in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection and played junior hockey for the Whalers until 2013. Despite sustaining a number of injuries, he earned attention for his size, toughness, and playoff performance in 2012. He was selected 16th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2012 NHL draft and he signed with the Capitals shortly after.
