Rumors surrounding a potential Quinn Hughes trade have intensified as the Vancouver Canucks continue to struggle, but one top insider is pushing back. Speaking on NHL Now on Saturday, David Pagnotta dismissed the possibility of an in-season move, saying he does not see Vancouver trading its captain during the year.

Hughes has been linked to the New Jersey Devils in rumors, where his brothers Jack and Luke play. However, Pagnotta stressed that the Canucks are not prepared to move their franchise cornerstone.

"Yeah, I mean, first with respect to the captain, I don't anticipate anything happening in the season with regard to Quinn Hughes," Pagnotta said. "Teams are still going to poke around. They're going to try to see every couple of weeks. Have you changed your mind? Is this an option now? I just—I don't see it right now. With respect to Quinn Hughes."

Trade speculation has grown due to Vancouver’s difficult start and Hughes’ looming contract negotiations. Hughes has been central to Vancouver’s identity since being named captain in 2023. His Norris Trophy season elevated expectations, and the team’s regression has fueled speculation.

Hughes has produced 22 points in 24 games, relying heavily on 20 assists. His minus-7 rating reflects Vancouver’s defensive problems, not a decline in talent. He continues logging massive minutes and drives transition play.

Meanwhile, the Canucks sit at 11-15-3, despite their lineup featuring talent. They lack consistency in scoring and defensive execution. Special-teams issues and an inability to finish tight games have worsened their situation. The team needs structural improvement to return to contention.

Hughes, who is in the last year of his contract, remains Canucks' most valuable asset, yet Pagnotta believes any discussion about his future will occur in the offseason, not during an active campaign.

Canucks' Quinn Hughes talked about heavy ice time

Last Thursday, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes spoke candidly about the heavy workload he has carried this season. Hughes admitted that logging league-leading minutes has taken a toll.

"I mean, yeah, I get tired, for sure," Hughes said. "There are definitely moments in games where, you know, I'm breaking up pucks, I'm transporting pucks to the neutral zone. I'm doing my thing in the O-zone... So, yeah, I mean, I'm not, not perfect, not Superman, but can always strive to be better."

Hughes has remained Vancouver’s most dependable player, averaging 27:24 per night. Recent games have pushed him close to 30 minutes as the team leans on him in every situation.

Despite the strain, Hughes is always working to improve.
