The NY Rangers could be looking to move a big-name impending UFA this season. Specifically, Russian star Artemi Panarin could be that UFA on the move amid the Blueshirts' sluggish start.

In an appearance on B/R Open Ice published on October 28, insider Frank Seravalli dismissed the idea of Nazem Kadri heading to the Carolina Hurricanes. Instead, Seravalli focused his attention on the NY Rangers and Artemi Panarin.

Seravalli stated:

“I could see Artemi Panarin as a Cane, though. That’s one name for the Carolina Hurricanes to keep an eye on. They want to be aggressive. That’s one guy I’d be keying in on if the Rangers continue to hover at the very bottom of the standings.”

The NY Rangers currently find themselves at the bottom of the Metro Division standings and can’t seem to find a way out.

As such, the Rangers could cut their losses and make a trade with a division rival like Carolina. The Hurricanes, currently valued at $1.92 billion by Sportico, have the wherewithal to pull off a deal such as this one.

However, Seravalli questions whether Panarin would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to join Carolina. Even if he did, the bigger question would be what the Canes could be willing to offer in exchange for Panarin.

Seravalli, nonetheless, concluded by stating:

“I think that would be a great fit, particularly for a team that also has some Russians.”

There’s no trade imminent at this point. But that doesn’t mean things can’t change quickly as the calendar turns to November.

Artemi Panarin's team, the NY Rangers has trade history with Hurricanes

The NY Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes, despite being division rivals, are no strangers to making trades. This past summer, the Rangers and Canes teamed up to send defenseman K’Andre Miller from Broadway to Carolina in exchange for Scott Morrow and two draft picks.

As such, NY Rangers’ GM Chris Drury and his counterpart in Carolina, Eric Tulsky, seemingly have a good partnership. That history could mean the Rangers and Canes might team up once again, only this time in what would be a blockbuster move.

Since the Hurricanes have over $9 million in cap space, fitting Artemi Panarin’s $11+ million cap hit wouldn’t be an overly challenging feat. The Canes could move out an undesirable contract just to make the numbers work.

Ultimately, the Hurricanes will have to get somewhat creative to make the deal work. They only have three picks in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Canes hold the Dallas Stars’ first-round pick and two sixth-round picks. As a result, the Rangers may have to settle for other futures, such as the boatload of picks the Canes hold in the 2027 NHL Draft.
