Trade chatter has continued around Philadelphia Flyers forward Owen Tippett, but the organization is actively trying to shut it down. On Friday’s episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Philadelphia has grown increasingly concerned about the impact of the speculation on Tippett, who is in the second year of an eight-year, $49.6 million contract (via Spotrac).
"Owen Tippett, it has been a name around a lot, and I kind of looked into this one a little bit," Friedman said. [39:10 onwards] "And I think the Flyers are trying to do everything they can to calm the noise around him. I think it's bothered him a little bit. I think he's definitely heard it.
"I think the flyers are trying to say, 'Look like this is not our doing.' And I do think the Canucks asked about him. I don't think that's going to be happening, but I've heard that the Flyers believe that there's another level they can get Owen Tippett, and also, too, for his contract."
While Vancouver did inquire about the 26-year-old winger, Philadelphia is confident that Tippett's long-term cap hit of $6.2 million will age well as league salaries rise.
"I think the Flyers see that too," Friedman said. "I think they're trying to calm down the noise, simply because this is not created by them. Sometimes names are out there because teams are looking to move guys. This is not the case with Owen Tippett, so we'll see where that goes."
Rumors have linked Philadelphia and Vancouver on multiple fronts, including Philadelphia’s reported interest in Vancouver forward Kiefer Sherwood and speculative chatter involving Quinn Hughes. However, Hughes remains untouchable for now, and the Flyers are unwilling to part with Tippett in this case.
Owen Tippett's place is likely secure in Flyers' forward group
Through 26 games this season, Owen Tippett has recorded 9 goals and 9 assists for 18 points. He is delivering crucial secondary scoring and strong play, driving for Philadelphia, fighting to stay competitive. Philadelphia sees him as a core piece, not a trade chip, and is intent on resetting the narrative.
With a summer masterstroke in trading for forward Trevor Zegras, the Flyers have looked good this season. They have a balanced forward depth, including Matvei Michkov, Travis Konecny, Sean Couturier, Christian Dvorak, and others. So, they will try to contend with the group without cutting the roster.
While trade discussions continue ahead of the holiday freeze, all signs point to Tippett remaining in orange and black.
