Former NHL general manager Doug MacLean floated a surprising trade idea involving Morgan Rielly this week. On "The Real Kyper and Bourne Show," MacLean suggested a blockbuster deal that would send the Leafs defenseman to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for blueliner Darnell Nurse."That's what you've got to hope for with respect to a trade," MacLean said. "I mean, Morgan Rielly. You know, we've talked about him for 10 years, and Nick, to me, was right on the cusp of being a great number two defenseman. Never perceived him as a number one guy, but a really good number two. I don't know if he's a top four guy right now."Nurse, I mean, at nine and a half million, that's a tough contract to swallow for a guy that is really, really inconsistent. I don't know what it would be like in Toronto for him, because we know the market and how tough it is, but I mean, if I could do Nurse for Rielly, I'd do it in a heartbeat."Nurse is on an eight-year, $74 million deal with a $9.25 million cap hit through 2029-30. Rielly, meanwhile, is on an eight-year, $60 million contract with a $7.5 million hit that also runs through 2029-30.This season, Nurse has produced 10 points in 26 games while posting a minus-10 rating. His physical game remains strong, but defensive lapses continue to be an issue. Rielly, meanwhile, has 20 points in 24 games and remains one of Toronto’s most consistent puck movers.Morgan Rielly for Darnell Nurse trade stems from both teams' inconsistent startBoth the Maple Leafs and Oilers have struggled defensively this season. Toronto sits last in the Atlantic Division with an 11-11-3 record. Their key playmaker, Mitch Marner, got traded to Vegas this offseason, and they have also faced multiple injuries.Edmonton holds an 11-10-5 record and faces its own problems with defensive structure and inconsistent goaltending. After making it to two straight Stanley Cup finals, they don't look like a playoff contender this season.
