NHL rumors: Canucks to forego "legit trade fodder" Kiefer Sherwood contract extension

Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood has emerged as one of the standout players for the team this season.

He is in the final year of his $3 million deal, making him an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-26 season. However, his breakout may actually complicate the team's plan.

According to TSN's Darren Greger, while Kiefer Sherwood's camp has spoken informally with the Canucks, there have been no official extension talks—and there may not be any soon. This makes Sherwood legitimate trade fodder at the March trade deadline.

"There's no guarantee that they're going to extend this guy; he could become legit trade fodder for the Canucks, but that'll happen closer to the trade deadline," Dreger said.

Canucks HC Adam Foote called their 4-2 loss to Stars their best game of the season

On Thursday, the Vancouver Canucks suffered a 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars at Rogers Arena. The Canucks outshot the Stars 36-24 but could not convert their scoring opportunities into goals.

Despite the loss, head coach Adam Foote called it their best game of the season so far in his post-game media interaction.

“It was probably our best game of the year,” coach Adam Foote said via NHL.com. “We frustrated them. The second period, we pretty much dominated. You could see it in their game. It was good.”

Linus Karlsson and Elias Pettersson were the scorers for Vancouver in the matchup. Meanwhile, Collin Blackwell, Jason Robertson, Mikko Rantanen, and Mavrik Bourque contributed a goal apiece for Dallas.

The Canucks currently sit seventh in the Pacific Division with a 9-11-2 record and 20 points. Their next game is against the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena. The puck drops at 10 p.m. ET.
