The St. Louis Blues could be on the verge of making a splash in the trade market this season. The team’s subpar start has fueled trade rumors, which have intensified following the benching of Jordan Kyrou.

According to insider Frank Seravalli, though, Kyrou won't be the first to exit the Blues’ lineup. The player to watch in that regard is team captain Brayden Schenn.

During his Nov. 11 appearance on B/R Open Ice, Seravalli explained how Schenn, who is in the sixth year of an eight-year, $52 million contract, could be the first domino to fall.

"I'm here to tell you I don't think Jordan Kyrou is the first out the door. Could be wrong, but I would think that based on the way this season has gone, based on how thin the center market is, and based on the number of teams that were involved last year, that my guess would be that Brayden Schenn would be the first guy out the door for the St. Louis Blues if they do end up making a move.”

The claim hinges on the relatively thin trade market, with numerous teams looking to add talent. The Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers have all been mentioned in speculation about additions down the middle.

Seravalli went on to explain the rationale behind the Blues potentially moving Schenn:

“We know that Doug Armstrong has an itchy trigger finger on the best of days, and with this start to the Blues season, the unacceptable start to their season, after entering the year with some expectations, the thought process would be that changes would be afoot.”

In short, Blues GM Doug Armstrong could be willing to pull the trigger on a deal if he thinks changes are needed to get the team back on track.

Toronto Maple Leafs could circle back to Blues captain Brayden Schenn this season

One of the teams that was reportedly interested in the St. Louis Blues captain last season was the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to insider Elliotte Friedman on the latest edition of the "32 Thoughts" podcast, the Maple Leafs were pressing hard to acquire Schenn.

However, the deal did not progress because the Blues’ asking price for Schenn was too high for the Leafs. Moreover, Toronto’s goal was to apparently reunite Brayden with his brother, Luke Schenn. Luke ended up going to the Winnipeg Jets, essentially nixing any possibility of a trade involving Brayden and the Maple Leafs.

The biggest question that remains is the asking price. There is a chance that Armstrong might be willing to lower his asking price to secure a deal, with the aim of sending a message to the rest of the team, although that seems unlikely.
