Former NHLer TJ Oshie and his wife Lauren Oshie have partnered with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca to raise awareness about the importance of cancer screening. The announcement came this week through Lauren Oshie’s recent Instagram post featuring a video of the couple talking about their commitment to the cause.
In her post, Lauren wrote:
“I’m proud to partner with @astrazenecaus’s Get Body Checked Against Cancer initiative, because cancer screening is one of the best defenses we have. Take care of yourself and the people you love. Get screened.”
She encouraged followers to nominate loved ones for cancer screening and provided resources for learning more about testing options.
During the video, TJ Oshie shared a personal motivation for joining the campaign, revealing:
“We found out after my dad passed that he had colon cancer. Because of that, I learned I was at a higher risk. And I got screened much earlier than I ever thought I would have based on my doctor's recommendation.”
Lauren emphasized the urgency of screening citing that only 35% of people are aware of colorectal cancer screening recommendations. She urged families to take proactive steps.
“Taking charge of your health and the health of your family starts with talking to your doctor about getting screened for cancer and encouraging your loved ones to do the same. Screening can often help find cancers early before they even have a chance to spread.”
The Oshies’ partnership is part of AstraZeneca’s ongoing “Get Body Checked Against Cancer” campaign which encourages individuals to talk to their doctors about early detection and cancer screening. The initiative also collaborates with the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer™ program. As part of this collaboration, donations are made to the V Foundation for Cancer Research when NHL players reach scoring milestones, with goals reaching up to $500,000.
TJ Oshie takes on new role post retirement
Earlier in September, TJ Oshie moved into a new role after stepping away from the NHL. The former Washington Capitals forward retired in June following 16 seasons in the league but did not leave hockey behind. He joined Monumental Sports Network as part of the Capitals’ broadcast team for the 2025-26 season.
The announcement came when Monumental Sports & Entertainment released the Capitals’ broadcast schedule. Team owner Ted Leonsis posted on X that it was only a matter of time before Oshie returned in a new capacity.
"You knew we wouldn't let @TJOshie77 stay away for that long 🎙️📺 Osh joins the best broadcast team in the @NHL this season @MonSportsNet ! #ALLCAPS," Leonsis tweeted.
Oshie had been drafted 24th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2005 and played seven seasons there before joining Washington in 2015. His best season came in 2016-17 when he scored 33 goals in 68 games. Over his career, he appeared in 1,010 games finishing with 302 goals and 695 points and contributed to the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup run.
