Earlier this week, NHL great Teemu Selanne’s daughter Veera Selänne shared a light-hearted father-daughter video discussing hockey on Instagram. Posted on Tuesday, the clip showed the Veera breaking down Anaheim’s recent play from the perspective of someone new to hockey in a humorous, unscripted back-and-forth with one of the greatest players in franchise history.

The video opened with Veera joking about having to re-record after accidentally filming without hitting the record button while Teemu pretended to be dozing off and then teased her for not having makeup on.

During the conversation, Veera pointed out that she didn’t love seeing players arrive at games in hoodies and sweatpants, insisting that more polished outfits look far more professional.

“I think they need to have stylists… I think they should have a nice, ilike nice pants and a nice shirt. It looks like a professional. They look like amateurs when they’re going in, in my opinion.” she said.

Teemu, who played most of his career under strict dress codes, agreed wholeheartedly saying he feels “embarrassed” by the league’s relaxed standards and believes dressing well shows respect for the game.

“A hundred percent.. When I came to the league, obviously it’s always suit and tie. There’s some point, you know, you didn’t need a tie if you had a nice shirt and nice suit. And right now I feel, to be honest, embarrassed.”

“You know like it’s a showtime. It’s a great day for hockey when you go play hockey. And when you dress up properly with a nice suit and tie, you show that this is a big deal for you. And this is going to be like a party time for you, showtime.”

He went on to say he isn’t in any position to make decisions for the team but thinks the league has drifted in the ‘wrong’ direction with its relaxed dress codes. While he agreed that players don’t always want to wear a full suit and tie, he said that the casual look has gone too far, pointing out the ‘winter hats’ and other laid-back outfits players now wear even in warm weather.

Teemu Selanne’s daughter shares her two cents on Ducks’ passing game

From there, Veera launched into her “analysis” explaining that although she’s never played hockey, she has been watching more games lately and had a few thoughts on what the Anaheim Ducks need to improve.

Her first point focused on the Ducks’ passing noting that in a recent game against Colorado, the Avalanche seemed better spread out and more connected, while Anaheim at times looked clustered and predictable.

“Compared to the Ducks, I think the Ducks, when they move, they kind of go like three players or two players, so their passes are not going exactly where they want it,” she explained.
“So I would recommend them if I was a coach, I would tell them to spread apart and know a little bit more of— like— have a little sound or something.”

Teemu expanded on her take saying the Ducks were “a little sloppy” early in that matchup and emphasized how crucial clean passing is for creating time and space in a fast-paced game.

Veera then shifted to Anaheim’s young roster, half-joking that the players need “more muscle” and should come to the family’s restaurant for steak to bulk up. Teemu laughed and agreed that many of the Ducks’ young players are still in the early stages of developing NHL-level strength calling them “puppies” who will naturally fill out as they mature and train.

The exchange ended with Veera thanking viewers and Teemu joking that Veera shouldn’t “quit his day job” and recalled a memory of once suggesting strategy changes to former Ducks coach Randy Carlyle who promptly told him he’d need to take a pay cut if he wanted to be behind the bench.

“I always try to ask Randy Carlyle, who was our coach, about how about if you would do these things this way? And he looked at me and said, ‘Teemu, do you want to be the coach? You’d better f**king take a pay cut.’ So I said, ‘No, no, I don’t want to be coach.’”

Teemu Selanne played 21 NHL seasons with Winnipeg, Anaheim, San Jose and Colorado finishing with 684 goals and 1,457 points in 1,451 games. He set the all-time rookie scoring record in 1992-93 with 76 goals and 132 points, won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007, earned the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2006 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.
