President Donald Trump hosted members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic men’s ice hockey team at the White House on Friday honoring the legendary squad with Congressional Gold Medals in recognition of their historic “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. The event marked the 45th anniversary of the iconic win and the team’s lasting legacy in American sports history.During the ceremony, Ryan Suter, son of the late Bob Suter, stepped forward to speak on behalf of his father who was a defenseman on the original 1980 team.“My name is Ryan Suter. I’m here representing my dad, Bob, who passed away. It’s a true honor for me to be a part of this and I thank these guys for allowing me to be a part of their team and thank you for having this and hosting us,” Suter said. The interaction between Suter and President Trump then included a lighthearted exchange about Ryan’s own NHL career. The Congressional Gold Medals awarded during the ceremony will be displayed at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum.Team USA presented Donald Trump with 1980 Olympic Opening Ceremony replica hatDuring the ceremony, Team USA captain Mike Eruzione presented President Trump with a replica of the white cowboy hat worn by the team during the 1980 Olympic Opening Ceremony in Lake Placid.“Mr. President, Michael Eruzione, on behalf of the team, we have a replica hat that we wore at the opening ceremonies in Lake Placid. We'd like you to have that. And more importantly, I don't think words can explain how proud we are of what you've done for our team,” Eruzione said.Trump accepted the hat with humor recalling a past political misstep involving a helmet:“Thank you. Thank you very much. Let's see, what do I do with this? Remember a certain governor in Massachusetts, when they put that helmet on, that was not good. Michael did that. They put that helmet on, that was the end of his political career. But the honor that you've bestowed upon our team is something that's incredible.”Also in attendance were surviving team members including goaltender Jim Craig, forward Buzz Schneider and Ken Morrow, as well as family members of deceased players including Coach Herb Brooks.
