Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner shared his thoughts about the Oilers fans demanding him off the roster.
Skinner has been one of the most scrutinized players in the league, largely due to his inconsistent performance, particularly in crucial games, and for perceived defensive breakdowns in front of him that lead to goals.
The criticism has only increased after he surrendered four goals on eight shots in the Oilers’ 8-3 defeat to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The goaltender recently opened up about the fans’ criticism he has received for his play:
"It's happened a lot here. No, I was there for that. I felt bad for him. I mean, that's happened a few times here," Skinner said. " It's I think it happens anywhere around the league. Goalies need to come up with big saves at big times. I'm not really too sure how much I can really say on that either. It's kind of just part of the game of being a goalie."
On whether he wants to continue playing for the Oilers despite the criticism, Skinner added:
"Of course. Yeah. I mean, I want to be in the NHL. Everybody keeps all these fans keep yelling, "We need a better goal! We need a bigger goal!" Yeah, sure. But you want to be here even though you're taking all this? Yeah. It is what it is. Again, I can't really control what the fans are saying."
Stuart Skinner, currently signed to a three-year, $7.8 million deal, has posted an 8-7-3 record, going 3.18 GAA and a .878 save percentage.
Former NHL goalie believes Stuart Skinner is not the main problem for the Oilers
Former NHL goaltender Martin Biron believes Stuart Skinner is not the main problem for the Oilers' goaltending woes, despite the heavy scrutiny on the netminder.
Speaking on SC with Jay Onrait, Biron emphasized that the issue lies more with the team's lost confidence in him than his actual performance metrics.
"Right now, I actually don't think Stewart Skinner is the problem," Biron said. "He's about 33rd, 32nd, and goal save is above expectation. That's over 70 goalies that have played. So he's okay. He's in the middle of the road. But I feel like the room has lost the belief that Stuart Skinner can be the solution, right?"
Meanwhile, Skinner's Oilers (10-10-5) will be up against the Seattle Kraken (11-6-6) at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday.
