Former NHL defenseman and Spittin’ Chiclets host Ryan Whitney, a longtime Edmonton Oilers supporter, talked about the Tristan Jarry-Stuart Skinner trade. He delivered a blunt reaction to Friday’s goalie shakeup. After the Oilers traded Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick to Pittsburgh for Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin, Whitney admitted he was torn.

In a post on X, he wrote,

"Wow the Oil have moved on from Stuart Skinner. Tristan Jarry is the new man in town and while being excited I’m also kind of scratching my head. Jarry cleared waivers 12 months ago and has a real tough time staying healthy. His ceiling is higher than Skinner so here we go."

The mixed reaction mirrors the mood across Edmonton. Skinner posted an 11-8-4 record with a 2.82 GAA and .891 save percentage, but inconsistency pushed management to act. He was their starting goalie in their previous two Stanley Cup finals runs, so there's an uncertain scare around this move if Jarry fails to deliver.

However, General Manager Stan Bowman defended the move, saying the team had followed Jarry closely and remained impressed with his performance over the years.

"We've watched him very closely & we've been impressed with his performance over the course of his career," Bowman said.

Jarry arrives with strong credentials, considering he has a 9-3-1 record, 2.66 GAA, and .909 save percentage this season. He has two All-Star selections and 10 years in Pittsburgh. His playoff experience and consistent long-term numbers offer Edmonton a proven starter as they chase stability in the crease. Poulin provides depth, while the Oilers added defenseman Spencer Stastney in a separate deal.

For Pittsburgh, Skinner becomes part of a new tandem with Arturs Silovs, giving the Penguins a younger option who may benefit from a fresh start.

The uncertainty will clear in the upcoming week if Jarry settles into a position that has defined the Oilers’ highs and lows for years.

Stuart Skinner won 4-1 in his last game in Oilers' jersey

Stuart Skinner helped the Edmonton Oilers in their 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, backing a night driven by sharp finishing and Connor McDavid’s playmaking with four assists.

Skinner said banking wins at home mattered in an insanely competitive league.

"It’s massive," Skinner said about the win. "It’s an insanely competitive league, every team is finding ways to win and climbing up the ladder in the standings. For us to get a few wins here was really important. Especially on a homestand, you want to bank as many as you can."

Zach Hyman scored a hat trick, including an empty netter to seal the win for Oilers.
