In a frustrating 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, Edmonton Oilers goaltender Calvin Pickard endured a challenging outing.

The 33-year-old posted a dismal .800 save percentage out of 20 shots he faced. Despite the Oilers’ offense firing on all cylinders, the defensive lapses in front of Pickard were glaring, allowing Columbus to capitalize in a high-scoring affair.

Calvin Pickard's campaign so far has been underwhelming, with a bloated 4.17 goals-against-average (GAA) and a save percentage languishing at .830 through the first seven appearances.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch has been vocal in shielding Pickard post-game, pinning the loss on defensive breakdowns rather than the 33-year-old's play. He said after the game:

“(The Oilers must) make it harder for them to get inside position on us,” Knoblauch said. “Too often they were left alone in front of the net with just (Pickard) by himself."

Pickard has posted a 2-3-1 record this season for the Oilers, who are third in the Pacific Division with an 8-7-4 record.
