Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri has drawn plenty of interest from around the league. In particular, the interest stems from one key contractual change.
In the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, insider Elliotte Friedman dives into the topic of Nazem Kadri and his changing no-trade clause. The specific change pertains to his full no-trade clause converting into a 13-team modified no-trade clause.
That situation has prompted teams all over the NHL to look to find out if they are on Kadri’s list. Friedman expounded on the matter, stating:
“He's got a 13-team no-trade now; his clause has changed. I heard that teams are all over it. Okay, am I on that list? Am I not on that list? I'm on that list. How did I end up on that list? And how do I change that? Like, I think that's what's going on here.”
The situation has also motivated teams to figure out why they’re on the list. If so, teams also want to know what it’s going to take to recruit Nazem Kadri for their team. That scenario led Friedman to add:
“But when you find out it's a partial and you're trying to find if you're on that list, all of a sudden, if you realize you're there, you're like, what? We're there. We like this guy. How do we get off of there? So I think, and I'm sure Kadri, because he's got a lot of personal pride and stuff. He's out there saying, You know what, if people want me, I'm not giving up on my current team. That's just not the way I'm wired. I'm going to compete for them."
The issue of personal pride may get in the way, prompting Kadri to forego waiving his no-trade clause to remain with the Flames. That situation might mean the Flames ultimately deal Kadri to a team not currently on his list.
Nazem Kadri staying put until his 1,000th game
Nazem Kadri has been virtually on every contender’s radar. The 35-year-old center, who’s nearing his 1,000th NHL game, won’t be on the move before that.
As Friedman elucidated on when Kadri could be moved. While Friedman did not venture to approximate when he might be traded, Friedman did categorically state when he wouldn’t be moved.
During the October 25 edition of Saturday Headlines, Friedman delved into the Nazem Kadri chatter, declaring:
“Number 1, there is zero chance, zero, he is going anywhere before he plays the game No. 1,000. He’s at 994 right now; it’s obviously a huge deal to him, his family, and the Flames, and nothing will happen before the that 1,000th game is played soon.”
That statement means that, at best, it could be a couple of weeks before the Flames even come close to trading Kadri. Even if the Flames had a deal in place right now, they wouldn’t likely trade him the next day following his 1,000th game. So, it could be a matter of several weeks before the Flames feel comfortable about moving Kadri.
The ultimate roadblock for any team looking to land Kadri is determining if they are on his no-trade list and what it would take to get him to agree to a trade.
