The Toronto Maple Leafs have had their fair share of injury issues this season. One of the most significant problems has been the absence of goaltender Joseph Woll. The netminder missed the start of the season due to an undisclosed personal matter.

In the meantime, Anthony Stolarz has been left to pick up the slack in the Maple Leafs’ crease. While Stolarz has been decent, concerns have emerged regarding his workload. That’s a major concern, NHL analyst Luke Fox said.

During an appearance Nov. 11 on Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Fox made his thoughts clear about pushing Stolarz too far this season amid Woll’s absence. He stated:

“They had great success last year, but that was with Woll and Stolarz both being available. One got hurt for a little bit, or one needed a rest. You know, they picked the other one up, and it worked fine.”

However, Fox sounded the alarm:

“You subtract Woll from the equation, yeah, for sure. All of a sudden, the depths are getting questioned.”

Fox referred to the failed experiments of James Reimer and Cayden Primeau. Both netminders are gone from the organization, leaving the team to turn to Dennis Hildeby. That situation has led the Maple Leafs to rely heavily on Stolarz.

As such, Fox drove the point home:

“Anthony Stolarz, I think, is just built to be a tandem goalie. He's not built to start you 50 games. He's never done it. So them overworking him, and Berube has admitted to that in the early going, I think has taken a toll on him, both physically and mentally.”

Stolarz started 33 games last season, the highest total of his career. He’s already started 12 games this season and is on pace to easily surpass that mark.

Woll nearing return for Maple Leafs

The good news is that Joseph Woll is nearing a return for the Maple Leafs. The 27-year-old is currently in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies on a conditioning stint. As Fox pointed out, Woll is likely to get another start in the AHL before heading back to the NHL.

That situation means Woll could be back in the crease for Toronto as soon as Saturday night in Chicago, or perhaps on Tuesday in St. Louis. Woll, a St. Louis native, could make his season debut in his hometown.

Having Woll back in the crease would be a huge boost for the Maple Leafs. Their tandem last season was one of the NHL’s best. If the duo can return to that form, it would make the team substantially better than it has been this season.

Woll is now in the first year of a three-year extension, and he’ll be looking to prove the team was right in signing him last season.
