NHL analyst JD Bunkis has raised concerns about Craig Berube’s future as the Toronto Maple Leafs struggle to find consistency. The Leafs are 9-9-2 after a start plagued by inconsistency this season. They recently lost five straight games, which highlighted several problems. They gave up too many goals during this run, including losses to Boston, Carolina, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Berube joined the Leafs in the summer of 2024 and led his team to the playoffs. However, the Leafs faced another early exit, losing in the second round. They had to part ways with forward Mitch Marner after his 102-point season, and now several players are injured, including Auston Matthews and Chris Tanev.

Bunkis spoke about the situation on The JD Bunkis Podcast and said injuries should not change the expectations for this team. He pointed out that the Leafs looked slow even when the roster was healthy.

"I just don't think that missing Auston Matthews and Chris Tanev and even Nicolas Roy, who people have been complaining about, or Brandon Carlo, who everybody's been complaining about," Bunkis said.
"That this, all of a sudden, creates an excuse vacuum for this team. Like, hey, don't worry, they're injured. And, no, no, they looked bad when they were healthy. So nothing changes."

Bunkis questioned if the head coach is now on the hot seat. He believes the next set of games will be very important for Craig Berube.

"If the Leafs get blown out tonight [against St. Louis], it's going to get loud when it comes to whether or not their head coach should remain with the hockey team," Bunkis said. "Like, [if] they have a bad game tonight, and it's over for Craig Berube, but this next stretch, four of your next five games are against some of the worst teams in hockey,"

However, the Leafs won their game against the St. Louis Blues in overtime with a 3-2 score. It was forward William Nylander, who scored the winner in the extra period, ending their five-game losing streak.

Bunkis warned that poor performance could increase pressure on Craig Berube. He said the Leafs need wins in this next stretch.

"No Matthews, no Carlo, no Tanev, no Laughton, no Stolarz, no excuses." Bunkis aid. "They've got to get some wins. They got to play hard for their coach. Otherwise, I just—I don't think he's going to last beyond those five games."

Pressure on Maple Leafs and coach Craig Berube

Pressure on the Toronto Maple Leafs and coach Craig Berube remains high after last season’s playoff exit. The Leafs finished first in the Atlantic Division but fell to the Florida Panthers in seven games. They have made it to nine straight playoffs but have only two series wins.

This season, their defensive structure broke down often, and their goaltending has not offered support. Toronto scores 3.50 goals per game, led by Nylander and John Tavares, but a porous net is a concern, allowing 3.70 goals. The Leafs need stronger defense and improvement in play across all lines.

Now, with expectations still strong, the team must show progress. This next group of games may decide how long Craig Berube stays behind the bench.
