Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving orchestrated a major roster overhaul following the departure of Mitch Marner in a sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights.
To fill the void and bolster depth, Treliving invested around $23.75 million in cap hit across several key additions through trades and signings.
However, as the Maple Leafs sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, NHL analyst Jeff O'Neal unleashed a sharp criticism of the moves, particularly calling out Dakota Joshua and Matias Maccelli for their performance so far.
"Let's just be real about those two additions. Dakota Joshua and Matias Maccelli have done jack squat for this hockey team since coming here. One has a couple goals. I think they both have a couple goals, but their five-on-five play, they're invisible. They don't do anything. They shouldn't be in the lineup," O'Neal said.
He added:
"The only reason that they are is because they were acquired and there's nobody else to play. They don't do anything. They're honestly guys out on the ice. They don't do anything. I'm sorry. That's the honest assessment after watching them after this amount of time. They're not doing anything. The two of them, useless."
Dakota Joshua was traded to the Maple Leafs by the Vancouver Canucks in the summer. The 29-year-old has accumulated five points through two goals and three assists in 22 games.
Meanwhile, Matias Maccelli was dealt to the Leafs by the Utah Hockey Club following the 2024-25 season. He has accumulated nine points through four goals and five assists in 21 games.
Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews is expected to return against the Blue Jackets
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews sustained a lower-body injury after a hit from behind by Bruins' Nikita Zadorov during a game on Nov. 2. Matthews has since missed five games for the club.
Matthews skated on Monday and is expected to be back in the lineup when the Leafs travel to Nationwide Arena to face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. ET.
