Here’s a look at the action:

Thompson engaged Noesen in retaliation for an incident that occurred back in February. During the Sabres-Devils February 2 meeting, Stefan Noesen drilled Tage Thompson, elbowing him to the head.

Now, the Sabres star was looking for payback. He got just that on Friday night. It was the teams’ first meeting since that February game. The Sabres won that game 4-3.

However, the result on Friday night was much different, as Jake Allen made 34 saves to shut out the Sabres 5-0.

Tage Thompson left with unsettled business with Stefan Noesen from last meeting

The incident in question between Tage Thompson and Stefan Noesen took place in the third period of their February 2 matchup. At the 5:11 mark, Noesen caught Thompson with a huge elbow to the head. Thompson was slow to get up and needed assistance on the ice.

Here’s a look at the incident in question:

Noesen’s hit came after he had played the puck. Thompson attempted to play the puck, but got leveled instead.

Noesen got called for the hit and received a game misconduct. Thompson, luckily, passed concussion protocol.

What made matters worse for Thompson and Sabres’ fans was that Noesen did not receive any supplemental discipline from the league. As such, Thompson carried a beef round since then, looking for the first opportunity to get back at Noesen.

That opportunity came on Friday night. Although it should be said that the retaliation came a bit late. During the actual incident, the replay showed none of the Sabres’ players stood up for Thompson.

Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin called his team out after the February 2 incident for their lack of response. As The Hockey News quoted Dahlin:

“We have to work on that. That cannot happen again.”

Since no one else stood up for Thompson, he did it for himself. The message was sent, though the response on the ice the rest of the night was not one the Sabres wanted. The two teams will meet on December 21. So, there may be some more fireworks then.
