The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 in overtime of their back-to-back matchups on Saturday.
The victory also ended the Leafs’ three-game losing streak. However, NHL analyst Frankie Corrado doesn’t seem overly pleased with the performance, highlighting trust issues and noting that the team has been leaking a lot of goals recently.
Speaking on TSN, Corrado said:
"A little less sure than you right now, Gionco. I'll tell you why. Last year through nine games, they were 5-4. This year through nine games they're 4-4-1, but it has a very different feel. The Toronto Maple Leafs just got feasted off the rush defensively by the Buffalo Sabres."
Corrado added:
"They have looked leaky and passive in their own zone. So, yeah, there's a track record of them being able to outscore some of their problems, but with the way this team has played defensively this year, I'm less sure of them this year than I was last year when they eventually turned things around and won the division. I have some more trust issues this time around."
Maple Leafs HC Craig Berube makes his thoughts clear after snapping a three-game skid
In the first matchup of their back-to-back games against the Sabres, the Leafs lost 6-3 at KeyBank Center. In the second game, the Maple Leafs secured a 4-3 overtime win at home in Scotiabank Arena to snap their three-game skid.
After the game, Berube described the win as a gritty one:
"Gritty win is kind of how I look at it," Berube said post-game via NHL.com. "The difference for me tonight is we were better defending the odd-man rushes. … We were above things all night. It was a low-event game."
He added:
"You play teams like that, you have to make sure you are not giving those freebies up and we didn’t do that. Our guys played hard. I liked the jam they played with, physical, couple nice hits, a little bit [ticked] off."
The Maple Leafs currently sit sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 4-4-1 record. They'll be up against the Calgary Flames next on Tuesday.
