"Legends hang with legends": Social media erupts as Wayne Gretzky golfs with US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump was spotted away from the Oval Office on Saturday as he was joined for a golf session in Palm Beach, Florida, by LIV star and five-time majors winner Brooks Koepka, Fox News' Brett Baier, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, whose friendship with the 47th President has come under scrutiny.

Trump took to his Truth Social account to post a picture of the quartet dressed in their golf attire. Later, he had also uploaded a clip of a chip shot from a considerable distance, describing the "winning" feeling as "nice".

The Great One's acquaintance with Trump has generated plenty of controversy this year. The two have been friends outside the political sphere, but Trump blurred a few lines when he "offered" Gretzky the position of Canadian Prime Minister if Canada got admitted into the United States as the 51st state around Christmas last year.

Before those comments, the Gretzky family attended a pre-Presidential election party thrown by Trump on the eve of last year's elections. They were also present for Trump's inauguration ceremony in January. Gretzky was heavily booed at the Four Nations Face Off tournament back in February by Canadian fans who jeered at him.

Wayne Gretzky has opened up about his loyalty to Canada

Wayne Gretzky admitted on a November 12 episode of 100% Hockey that he isn't involved in the politics between the two nations and stressed his loyalty to his country.

"People are going to say and believe what they want,” Gretzky said. “The bottom line is, I know in my heart I’m Canadian, I’ve stayed Canadian and I’m a Canadian for life.

Gretzky also recounted that despite the heavy criticism, he received support from notable personalities, including then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and fellow NHL legend Bobby Orr.
