The Boston Bruins were handed a humiliating 7-2 defeat by the Ottawa Senators at the Canadian Tire Centre on Monday. It was their seventh loss in their last eight games after starting with a 3-0-0 record.
The Bruins were looking to follow up on a 3-2 win on Saturday night against the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs were unbeaten in regulation time till that point, and Boston also broke its six-game losing streak in the process.
However, they were no match for a Senators team high on offense. Bruins' Nikita Zadorov had a blunt assessment of his team's efforts. He acknowledged that playing back-to-back against the New York Islanders on Tuesday night could allow them to put this game behind them.
"You always take something out of any games," Zadorov said. (3:50) "Obviously, it's a slap to the face. We're the Boston Bruins. That's unacceptable. So we got to come up tomorrow and then play like we should in front of our crowd. Like I said, it's the best thing in this league: you have a game like that, but you can regroup tomorrow and then show who you are."
The Bruins for most of the game on Monday were in with a fight. They were down by a goal with almost 35 minutes played. Senators' Jake Batherson gave them a 3-1 lead with his second goal at 14:44 in the second period. The Sens then consolidated with four goals in the third period while the Bruins had a consolation with ten seconds left on the game clock.
Marco Strum says Bruins' penalties caught up to them vs. Sens
Bruins head coach Marco Strum wasn't pleased with his team taking penalties on Monday. The Senators scored four times in five opportunities against them on the power play. According to Strum, the team needs to find some discipline if it has to turn things around.
“We’re probably the worst penalized team in the League, so it finally caught up to us,” Sturm said to reporters after the game. “You can blame the ref, whatever you want, but it’s on us if we’re going to do that and be in the box the whole time. It’s not going to work and not going to win hockey games.”
With the loss, Boston remains rock bottom in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division standings. They have a (-8) goal differential and are the only team to have 11 games already this season.
