On Wednesday, New York Islanders defenseman Tony DeAngelo publicly called on President Donald J. Trump to take the strongest possible action against the suspect accused of shooting two National Guard members near the White House in what authorities have described as a targeted ambush-style attack. In a tweet posted on his X account, DeAngelo reacted to Donald Trump’s recent statement on the incident writing:“Make a PUBLIC example out of him Mr President. Thoughts & prayers with our national guardsmen who were just doing there jobs 🙏🏻 🇺🇸”The message accompanied the president’s own post in which Trump condemned the suspect as “the animal that shot the two National Guardsmen,” noting that both service members remain critically wounded and are being treated at two separate hospitals. Trump added that the suspect, who was also shot and hospitalized, “will pay a very steep price.”The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon just blocks from the White House near Farragut Square, where West Virginia National Guard members were stationed as part of the expanded security presence in Washington, D.C. The alleged gunman identified by law-enforcement sources as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021, was apprehended after an exchange of gunfire.Donald Trump sends strong message rallying nation against terrorismIn his televised address from Florida late Wednesday, President Donald Trump condemned the shooting near the White House as a deliberate and brutal ambush carried out on the eve of Thanksgiving.Trump added that the Department of Homeland Security believes the suspect in custody is an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021 calling Afghanistan “a hellhole on earth.”He alleged that the individual arrived during the Biden administration’s evacuation flights and that the suspect’s immigration status had been extended under legislation signed by President Biden.“We must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country.”“If they can't love our country, we don't want them. America will never bend or yield in the face of terror. At the same time, we will not be deterred from the mission the service members were so nobly fulfilling.”Trump also confirmed he has ordered the Department of War to mobilize an additional 500 troops to bolster security in Washington, D.C. He closed by urging Americans to pray for the wounded guardsmen along with their Thanksgiving prayers.
