The drama unfolded late in the third period when Rantanen was assessed a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for boarding Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov.

Romanov was hit hard from behind into the end boards, leaving him prone on the ice for several minutes before being helped off by trainers. As Mikko Rantanen made his way to the dressing room tunnel, Patrick Roy leaned over the boards and delivered the profanity-laced warning to the Stars forward.

"I hope he's going to be okay at this moment. I don't know what it is, but all I'm going to say is when you see the number, you have to lay off. Everybody knows that" Roy said post-game. "You don't go through the guy. And I'm proud the way that our guys handled it afterwards. No one was happy to see someone get hurt like this. And like I said, to me, it's disrespectful for our guys."

Rantanen played under Roy when he was the coach of the Colorado Avalanche during his draft year in 2015. When asked about the profanity-laced chirp at Rantanen, Roy said:

Yeah. He was in Colorado when he was drafted there, and it's not his style. But, I mean, at the same time, that's not that should not be part of our game. That should not be part of our game.

The Islanders, meanwhile, improved their record to 11-7-2, jumping fourth in the Metro Division standings. Their next matchup is against the Detroit Red Wings (12-7-1) on Thursday.
