In their official statement on X, the Capitals wrote:

"Mitch Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately. This decision follows the findings of an NHL-led investigation into past allegations. The organization is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability."

On Monday, Love finally shared his first public response to the allegations and denied the claims made by the victim. In his statement to the Washington Post, Love said,

"While I am disappointed by and disagree with the NHL's decision, I respect the process and accept both the league's findings and the Capitals' decision. I will continue to openly cooperate throughout this process.
"That said, I fully deny the allegations against me and look forward to returning to the sport I love as soon as possible."

It was insider Frank Seravalli who first reported the news about the NHL's decision on Love. On Sunday, he said that the alleged victim contacted the NHL directly. He also shared that the victim spoke with teams that had interviewed Love for head coaching jobs this year.

Seravalli wrote on X, saying,

"The victim reported allegations directly to #NHL and teams Love interviewed with over summer for head coach vacancies."

The Capitals placed Love on team-imposed leave in September during the NHL’s investigation. He had joined Washington in June 2023 as an assistant under Spencer Carbery.

Frank Seravalli's September comments on Mitch Love’s leave

Earlier on September 17, NHL insider Frank Seravalli had shared more details about why the Washington Capitals placed assistant coach Mitch Love on leave. Speaking on Insider Notebook, Seravalli said it may be related to an allegation made by a woman who had a former relationship with Love.

"My understanding is that this - an allegation made by a woman who had a former relationship with Mitch Love, and he was up for multiple other jobs..." Seravalli said. "This is not a new allegation, is my understanding. This is not an allegation that has been made over the course of his time while working for the Washington Capitals."

NHL teams, like the Seattle Kraken and Pittsburgh Penguins, were aware of the matter during their coaching searches.
