Former NHL coach Bruce Boudreau gave a clear view of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ season. The Leafs’ record sits at 8-9-2 after a bumpy start, and they have lost captain Auston Matthews and Chris Tanev to injury. This is happening after an offseason in which they parted ways with forward Mitch Marner.

Speaking on TSN OverDrive on Monday, Boudreau said it is too early to give up, as 63 games remain. Boudreau believes the team can defend better than it has shown.

"I think it's way too early to decide on whether they're going to punt," Boudreau said. "There are 63 games left in their season, and a lot can happen in there... it's not easy, but they can play good defense. They're just not playing defensively at all. They can get better.

"They have seen better goaltending, maybe with [Joseph] Woll and [Anthony] Stolarz. They can get back to where their goal tending should be, because they're fourth in the league in goal scoring, whether they've lost Marner or not, they're still fourth in the league in goal scoring. So you think about that... their scoring is right there."

Boudreau said that the Maple Leafs are doing some really "non-Leaf things of a Craig Berube team of last year." He pointed to plays where players were out of position and out of sync.

Boudreau used a recent David Pastrnak breakaway as an example of poor structure. He noted the players were lined up and not covering their areas, pointing out that the Leafs have allowed too many breakaways in the second period. This is a sign of a team not playing together. Still, he thinks the defense can improve.

"But I think they can recover from it. I don't know why, if they're panicking, if it's because they're missing a couple players," Boudreau said. "... But, I mean, I think defensively, they can get into sync again, and if they do that, but they gotta, it's gotta happen fairly quickly.
"Then I think their goal scoring will always take care of itself. I mean, I think they'll always be in the top 10. So, I mean, I always have hope for it... but right now, they haven't shown a lot of positive signs for me to think that way, but I still think that way."

The Maple Leafs are allowing 3.79 goals per game, which is near the bottom of the league. Their power play is also struggling at 16 percent. However, the offense remains strong with 3.53 goals per game, with forward William Nylander and John Tavares continuing to lead the scoring.

Injuries are a major concern for Maple Leafs this season

This season, key injuries have added more challenges to the Toronto Maple Leafs' team. Auston Matthews is out with a lower-body injury. Christopher Tanev, Brandon Carlo, and Marshall Rifai are also on injured reserve. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz is out as well. These injuries affect both defense and offense.

This is happening after another early playoff exit last season, in which the Maple Leafs lost to the Florida Panthers in the second round. The team has not reached the conference final since 2002, and this season, they must tighten their play to stay competitive.
