The Edmonton Oilers continue to face questions about their goaltending, but one former NHL netminder believes there is a clear, ideal answer. Edmonton's current situation in net has intensified outside calls for improvement after recent losses like 9-1 to the Avalanche, 5-1 to the Sabres, and 8-3 to the Stars.

Stuart Skinner (9-7-3, 3.00 GAA, .885 SV%, 2 SO) and Calvin Pickard (2-3-2, 4.04 GAA, .847 SV%) have both posted underwhelming numbers. For a team eyeing a deep postseason run, the inconsistency between the pipes is a major concern.

Speaking on Sunday, TSN analyst Marc Denis stated that if Edmonton could pursue any goalie, his choice would not be the more commonly rumored names like Tristan Jarry or Jordan Binnington. Instead, Denis identified Nashville Predators star Juuse Saros as Edmonton’s true "dream target."

"Names like Tristan Jarry may be more organic and natural to the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton market, but my dream target, my dream goalie, is named, Saros," Denis said. "If there is a world where Saros is not the starting goalie for the Predators, I'm doing everything in my power to get Saros in an Oilers jersey.

"He's in the first year of an eight-year contract, but it's a manageable one, with the cap rising. Eight goalies are making more money than Saros right now, which would make a lot of sense to do everything in power."

Saros is currently in the first year of an eight-year, 61.92-million-dollar contract that carries a manageable 7.74-million cap hit, per Denis. He argues that Saros' value would justify an aggressive pursuit if he ever became available. His deal runs through the 2032–33 season before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Talks about improving Oilers' defense amid the goalie situation

Edmonton entered the 2025–26 season committed to the Skinner-Pickard tandem, but inconsistent performances have fueled ongoing trade speculation. While the Oilers have been linked to Jarry and Binnington, the organization is hesitant to make what it considers a lateral move, preferring to pursue a true upgrade only if needed.

Currently, they are battling inconsistency, sitting at 11-10-5, and their defense can also be improved. Per Elliotte Friedman's statement from the 32 Thoughts podcast,

"I wonder if the Oilers are considering other defensive help too; are they looking at, okay it's not just about the goaltending, are there other changes that can help out defensive makeup"

However, if Saros ever hits the market, Denis believes Edmonton should be first in line. Until then, the team’s playoff hopes hinge on internal improvement and the current tandem finding its rhythm.
