On a recent episode of The Real Kyper and Bourne Show, former NHL enforcer Nick Kypreos joined co-host Justin Bourne to share their thoughts on William Nylander’s impact with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
While comparing his potential evolution to that of Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl, Bourne offered high praise for the latter's growth, saying (14:00 onwards):
"I think the best evolution might be Leon Draisaitl. Leon Draisaitl was a very good offensive player who was a terrible defensive player, who is no longer a terrible defensive player, and cares about winning, and that seems to be his focus."
"Yeah, I think it's uncommon. I don't think he doesn't have Leon's fire, but like I also think that Willie has a history."
Nick Kypreos took a subtle dig at the Leafs star while contrasting him with Draisaitl, adding:
"Leon Draisaitl doesn't disappear for 60 minutes and then show up in a three-on-three event."
With both the Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers struggling to find consistency this season, William Nylander and Leon Draisaitl have been two of the consistent performers on their respective teams. Nylander leads the Leafs with 27 points, while Draisaitl leads the Oilers with 14 goals.
William Nylander shares his thoughts after scoring the OT winner against St. Louis Blues
William Nylander ended the Maple Leafs' five-game losing skid after his overtime winner against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. The Maple Leafs won the game 3-2.
“I think it was a nice win after the tough stretch we’ve had,” Nylander said post-game via NHL. “Just battling and competing to grind out a win, it was nice.
He added:
“I think that’s what is needed to be a good team and to be able to win those kind of games. We were losing a lot of games, losing guys. That’s a lot of adversity right there."
The Leafs are seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 9-9-2 record. Their next game is against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.
