Young defenseman Mason Lohrei is still developing with the Boston Bruins, and this is his third NHL season. In 11 games, he has one goal and five assists, but has been a healthy scratch for the last three games.

Lohrei first got scratched in the game against the New York Islanders, then the Buffalo Sabres, and even Saturday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Bruins have won all of them, improving their record to 7-7-0 this season.

Prior to his scratch, Lohrei was getting an average of 18 minutes of ice time each game. He was helping the team with his puck movement and offensive support, but was still working to improve his play in the defensive zone.

Now, getting scratched for three straight games is a small setback for him, but it's part of his development. Speaking to reporters on Saturday morning, head coach Marco Sturm shared his reason behind scratching Lohrei.

"Yeah, no. He should be pissed," Sturm said. "He should be very pissed, he should be upset. He works hard in practice. He's ready. He just waits for his opportunities.

"But that's, you know, I think that's the goal - by having him out there and be a little bit different when he comes back, right? Watching from upstairs, watching some other players, what they do well, what they do wrong, too. "

Lohrei started the season playing with Charlie McAvoy, but that pair had some struggles. Since Lindholm’s return, McAvoy has played with Nikita Zadorov. That pairing has helped the team defend better. The Bruins hope Lohrei learns from this stretch and returns stronger.

"So it's, yeah, it's a learning process for him right now, and that's why we do it," Sturm said. "And um, but when it is, when it's his turn, you know, so we are hoping he's gonna get better too."

Boston Bruins defeated Hurricanes amid Lohrei's scratch

The Boston Bruins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Saturday at TD Garden. Jeremy Swayman made 28 saves in the win. Marco Sturm said Swayman was “outstanding” in the net.

"It doesn't really surprise me," Sturm said, via NHL.com.

Casey Mittelstadt and Viktor Arvidsson scored for Boston, and Charlie McAvoy had two assists. Sturm said he wants defensemen to join the rush, not lead it.

"I don't want them to lead the rush. I want them to join the rush, and that's a big difference," Sturm explained.

The coach saw it as one of their best games for all 60 minutes. And now, the Bruins are tied for the third spot in the Atlantic Division with the Ottawa Senators.
