3 least impressive Edmonton Oilers players from 4-3 OT loss against New York Rangers ft. Evan Bouchard

The Edmonton Oilers blew a 3-1 third-period lead to drop their Thursday night matchup 4-3 in overtime at Rogers Place.

Rangers captain J.T. Miller got the game-winner at 2:49 of the extra frame. Jonny Brodzinski, Braden Schneider, and Taylor Raddysh got the other tallies for the Blueshirts. Meanwhile, Darnell Nurse scored twice for the Edmonton Oilers, with Matt Savioe getting his first NHL goal, a power-play tally in the second period.

Igor Shesterkin was brilliant for the Rangers, making 33 saves on the night. Shesterkin kept his team in the game, buying them enough time to come back and force overtime.

#3 Andrew Mangiapane

The Edmonton Oilers' offseason free-agent signing continues to have a tough time. On Thursday night, Mangiapane skated for over 16 minutes across 21 shifts. He ended the minus-2, without a shot on goal.

Mangiapane has gotten a shot to play on the top line with Connor McDavid, but hasn’t really lived up to that opportunity. The Oilers will need him to turn things around, as the three goals and four points in 12 games weren’t precisely what the club expects from him.

#2 Stuart Skinner

Stuart Skinner had an overall decent game. He stopped 30 of 34 shots. But it was the shots that he didn’t stop that made all the difference in the third period.

Granted, the Oilers played sloppy defense in front of him. But if Skinner had bailed out his teammates at any point, the Oilers could have escaped Thursday night’s affair with the two points.

Here’s a look at an example:

The play started with a ghastly turnover at the Edmonton Oilers’ blue line. The Rangers came back and created a scoring opportunity. However, Skinner was unable to stop Taylor Raddysh even though it was a 1-on-1 with the Blueshirts’ depth forward.

Raddysh beat Skinner to tie the game. A timely stop there could have been the difference between a victory and the eventual outcome.

#1 Evan Bouchard

Evan Bouchard continues to show significant defensive flaws. On Thursday against the Rangers, the Oilers' top defenseman committed several turnovers and miscues, with more than one ending up in the back of the net.

Here’s arguably the worst one:

Jonny Brodzinski picked off a careless pass from Bouchard across the blueline. He skated back with the puck on a breakaway, with Bouchard unable to do much to stop the scoring chance.

As for Skinner, he was unable to do much himself. Brodzinski scored to get the Rangers on the board and get the early lead.

The Oilers will be expecting to tighten up their defensive game, as these awful gaffes have cost them dearly multiple times this season.

The Oilers will be back in action on home ice on Saturday night as they host the Chicago Blackhawks.
