Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor made Marvin Gaye famous back in 2015. The song peaked at No.21 on Billboard Hot 100 and is one of Puth's 13 songs that made it on the list. However, the singer-songwriter admitted that it wasn't originally for him to sing as the song was made for someone else.

He said in a recent interview with SiriusXM Hits 1, per People on November 24, that he co-wrote Marvin Gaye for CeeLo Green. He said:

"That was originally written for CeeLo. A lot of people don't know that, and if you play it in your mind, it kind of checks out [as] something that he would sing."

He added that Marvin Gaye ended up as a duet with Meghan Trainor due to "circumstance." He ended up singing it as his debut single, and he "ended up really liking it." However, Marvin Gaye isn't the only song that he wrote with someone else in mind, but later ended up as his song. It's also the same thing that happened with See You Again, which is Charlie Puth's best-charting song to date.

He said in an interview in 2017 that he co-wrote it with DJ Frank E and Wiz Khalifa to be used as a song tribute to the late Paul Walker at the end of the Furious 7 movie. However, he wasn't supposed to be on the song because he was a brand-new artist and "wasn't big enough." But he ended up singing it with Wiz Khalifa, and it became Puth's sole No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter has opened up about becoming a father and releasing new music since then. He announced back in October that the album is coming out on March 6, 2026, and he's been teasing some information to fans awaiting it.

Charlie Puth said in an interview with ABC News Live in October that he did something new while working on his new album. He said that in all his previous albums, he would create the melodies first before filling them with the lyrics. But he did the opposite with Whatever's Clever, saying:

"On this fourth album, it's the first time where I'm putting life first and then letting the melody follow."

In an X post on November 17, Charlie Puth teased that there are going to be "many special guests" on his upcoming album. He doubled down on the teaser by revealing exactly how many features will be on Whatever's Clever and how many songs will be in the album in another post on X on November 24. He said that there will be a total of 12 songs and seven features.
