In an interview with Rolling Stone, published on November 24, Cowell reflected on Liam Payne's death. There were also plenty of conspiracy theories after the singer's death, as some drugs were reportedly found in his bloodstream. Some theories even laid the blame on Cowell.

He responded to these rumors, stating:

"I don’t read any of this stuff because if I did, you would just torture yourself. The idea that you are essentially responsible for somebody’s life, 10 years after you’ve signed someone? You can’t do that."

Cowell also said that he had met Payne just a year before his death, and they spoke about the latter's son, Bear Grey. He welcomed Grey with his ex-partner, Cheryl, on March 22, 2017. Before his death, he was with Kate Cassidy.
