The creative team of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are in charge of the new DCU, has already made it clear that they are taking the characters in new directions.

When the film was previewed, the team discussed how Momoa transitioned into the new character, as reported by Entertainment Weekly on December 11, 2025. The report further stated that Safran said that the actor, in his off-the-charts excitement and all caps had been wildly and very different from the one normally portrayed, figuring prominently in his new message of the whole new DC universe, he wrote,

"I'll do the craziest, most villainous, chaotic character. Momoa’s character in the Supergirl (2026) definitely reflects the shift in tone from the film as well as make the introduction of one of the most awaited characters of the flick easier."

In fact, in the teaser, fans can only see the character with one hand holding a cigar and the other in a relaxed position, while the firm stands for his extreme character.

Lobo is a very risky one Jedi within the DC empire, as he quite often is in doing without morality, does not ally with anyone but himself, and keeps quite separate from the rest of the universe.

Lobo’s involvement in the Supergirl (2026) plotline is the one that causes the arrival of the ice-cold, out-of-the-blue antagonist for Kara Zor-El's coming.

The film Supergirl (2026), written by Ana Nogueira and directed by Craig Gillespie, is the DC Universe reboot's second entry. Milly Alcock is the lead actress playing the role of Kara Zor-El, who, in her version of Supergirl, appears to be a more robust and severe character, having witnessed the destruction of her home, Krypton.

The plot is about Kara's 23rd birthday, when she takes her dog Krypto along and roams different worlds. Ruthye Marye Knoll is the girl whom Kara meets and who is seeking her father's killer. The meeting instantly turns Kara's world upside down, resulting in a bloody and emotionally draining quest.

Other than that, Matthias Schoenaerts is Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley plays Ruthye, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are Zor-El and Alura - Kara's parents, and Jason Momoa is Lobo. The character of Superman is played by David Corenswet, who reprises the role from Superman (2025), thus maintaining continuity within the DCU, as seen in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters by Gunn and Safran.

With the main shooting taking place in the UK and Scotland from January to May 2025, the undertaking of Supergirl (2026) is targeted to be a heartfelt, down-to-earth one, featuring an empathetic character. It has gained a lot of influence from Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the highly praised comic book miniseries.
