Starring Sydney Sweeney as Christy Martin, the biographical drama film Christy is directed by David Michôd. The film, which is based on the life of the former female American boxer, is set to hit the theatres on November 7, 2025.
The plot follows Christy's rise from her small-town West Virginia roots to becoming America's most celebrated female boxer in the 1990s, a period where she broke major barriers in the male-dominated sport. Fuelled by raw determination, she enters the boxing world under the guidance of her trainer and future husband, Jim Martin.
The narrative also explores the boxer's personal struggles, such as her relationship with Jim Martin, who attempted to kill her by stabbing and shooting her. The film's production crew used several locations across North Carolina, where filming went underway from September 30, 2024.

Christy filming locations and production details
Many of the city's famous spots were transformed for during the film's production. One of those locations included the historic Bojangles Coliseum which doubled as a major fight arena and a dressing-room space, and other local businesses were transformed for Florida-set scenes.
Smaller Charlotte neighbourhoods were also featured, which included a residence in southeast Charlotte that served as a Florida-house location, while diners and restaurants were transformed to mirror Daytona Beach icons for the screenplay. During the production, Martin herself played a significant role by visiting the sets during the filming, offering insights and context to her portrayal on-screen. In an interview with Variety, Sydney Sweeney shared about Martin cheering the actress while she filmed the fighting scenes. She stated:
“She’s cheering you on and she’s yelling, ‘hit him with the hook!’ as if she’s actually watching a fight. And I’m like, ‘Christy, you know what’s going to happen.’ And she goes, ‘Yeah, but I’m still invested in this!’ It was such a fun experience.”
Sweeney also invested profoundly to embody the boxer. She underwent a three-month transformation, gaining around 35 pounds and training under a boxing coach, weight trainer and nutritionist. The White Lotus star also shared details on how fight scenes were filmed without any body doubles stating:
“Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force. I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits.”
Furthermore, Michôd cast Sydney Sweeney in Christy because of her work in the 2023 film Reality, where she delivered FBI-transcript dialogue as NSA analyst Reality Winner, proving her capacity for acting challenges. Additionally, Sweeney had a background in competitive fighting, which was a coincidence. In the same interview, Michôd said:
“She wanted to do the work. She wanted to train, she wanted to fight, she wanted to transform herself, and we were going to need all of that.”
Premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2025, Christy is set to hit the theatres on November 7, 2025.
