When will Train Dreams premiere? Release date, cast details, first look, and more

Directed by Clint Bentley, Train Dreams is slated for release on November 7, 2025, in limited U.S. theatres. Based on Greg Kwedar's novel of the same name, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, Clifton Collins Jr., Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy.

It follows Robert Grainier (Edgerton) in the early 20th-century Pacific Northwest. A quiet railroad worker and logger, Robert marries Gladys and becomes a father to a daughter. Though a tragedy involving a forest fire causes him heavy loss, and he soon spirals into grief, isolation, and a rapidly changing America. Robert ultimately searches for purpose amidst a vanishing way of life.

Premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025, Train Dreams will debut on Netflix on November 21, 2025, following its theatrical release.

The Australian actor and filmmaker Joel Edgerton is leading Clint Bentley's Train Dreams, portraying the railroad worker, Robert Grainier.

He achieved his career breakthrough with the critically acclaimed Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom (2010). His international fame grew significantly with roles such as Brendan Conlon in Warrior (2011) and the wealthy Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (2013).

As a filmmaker, he directed, wrote, and starred in the psychological thriller The Gift (2015) and the powerful drama Boy Erased (2018). More recently, he appeared in Apple TV+ science fiction series Dark Matter (2024). He will also appear in the psychological drama The Plague, set for release on December 24, 2025.

What is Train Dreams based on?

The novel Train Dreams was first published in The Paris Review in 2002 and later released as a book in 2011, becoming a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. It chronicles the story of Robert Grainier, a rail laborer in the American West during the early 20th century.

Grainier works as a logger and railroad bridge builder, witnessing the drastic changes brought by modernization and industrial expansion. The plot centers on his quiet, isolated life after the tragic loss of his wife and daughter in a massive forest fire.
