The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ new fantasy romantic comedy from A24, Eternity (2025), has been creating a buzz even before it hit the festivals with its run and cast announcement. Directed by David Freyne, the movie marks the director's latest collaboration with writer Pat Cunnane, who co-wrote the script alongside him. The film combines romance, the afterlife, and emotional choosing; a romantic comedy of the not-so-familiar kind.

The story takes place in the afterlife, where everyone is given a week to decide the place and the person with whom they will spend eternity. The characters Joan, Larry, and Luke are guided by their intertwined past and opposing feelings through this story, limited by time.

Joan has to make a tough decision between two of the most important people in her life: Luke, the ex-husband who died in a war, and Larry, the guy with whom she made her life.

The cast includes Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Joan, a character torn emotionally between two versions of her past. Miles Teller is Larry Cutler, the man with whom Joan spent most of her life, while Callum Turner plays Luke, Joan's first love, whose death causes the majority of her internal struggle.

Betty Buckley and Barry Primus are the older versions of Joan and Larry, respectively; thus, they take the film's timeline even further into different stages of life.

Moreover, Da'Vine Joy Randolph is Anna, Larry's guide in the afterlife, and John Early is Ryan, the coordinator who helps Joan. Olga Merediz completes the cast as Karen. The person in charge of the music for this movie was David Fleming.

By focusing on relationships and choices after death, the movie grounds its supernatural elements in reality. In the film, the characters are placed in a regulated afterlife system, with a one-week deadline serving as the device for emotional tension.
