Jimmy Cliff's old interview highlights his thoughts and experiences working on The Harder They Come
The Harder They Come was a milestone in Jimmy Cliff's career. As the movie gained love from fans and critics, it also became a memorable experience for the reggae star. In an interview on the 50th anniversary of the film, Cliff spoke to Variety in 2023 and shared his personal stories and anecdotes about The Harder They Come.
Talking about how he decided to take the role of Ivanhoe, Cliff shared in the interview:
"I was doing well in Europe, music-wise. I could have stayed touring and making a lot of money. But I accepted doing the movie which really wasn’t paying anything. Because I thought that I should act, as I did so in school. I always loved acting, becoming other people."
He further added:
"So, when that opportunity came, I accepted. Perry (Henzell) told me that he actually thought I was a better actor than I was a singer. That was funny, but it struck a chord with me — I figured that I was, at the very least, as good of an actor as I was at making music. I just never actually said it out loud, however. I kept that to myself.”
Cliff also elaborated on how his character stood out in the film and said:
"Ivanhoe was a real-life character for Jamaicans. When I was a little boy, I used to hear about him as being a bad man. A real bad man. No one in Jamaica, at that time, had guns. But he had guns and shot a policeman, so he was someone to be feared. However, being a hero was the manner in which Perry wanted to make his name — an anti-hero in the way that Hollywood turns its bad guys into heroes.”
Cliff's Ivanhoe became a striking character for Jamaicans and other international viewers who witnessed his complex journey in The Harder They Come. This film and all the musical creations by Jimmy Cliff continue to reflect the star's rich legacy that he left behind.
