Besides its four-hour 35-minute runtime, this extended cut was first shown at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and then at the New Beverly Cinema but never had a wide theatrical release.

With the film now coming out, there is a new focus on the extra material that has been incorporated into the combined story, exciting fans who have been loyal to the franchise across the years.

The theatrical version of the two Kill Bill movies shows a single story of The Bride’s mission for revenge and also reinstates some footage that was left out of the 2003 and 2004 releases.

The biggest single piece of the puzzle is the lengthier anime sequences that narrate the past of O-Ren Ishii. As Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair gets a new release, the main focus of the people has been until now on these new scenes that alter the characterization of the person and also give a more detailed look at Tarantino's stylistic ambitions.

What are the new scenes in Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair?

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair features an extended anime sequence done by Production I.G. that goes back further in the past of O-Ren Ishii and is the most important addition. The original film had a stylised animated segment depicting O-Ren’s traumatic childhood and rise to being the most powerful assassin.

In this extended version, it is disclosed that an entirely new fight was introduced for when O-Ren was 13 years old. The sequence shows her striking a criminal named Pretty Riki and his retaliation that exposes a more vulnerable point of her development.

This recovered narrative has increased violence, suspense-filled pacing, and use of a small space as most of the action takes place inside an elevator. Moving the franchise's visual language to new limits, the scene becomes a centrepiece, outdoing even the original anime in terms of its sheer brutality.

By O-Ren being put in a perilous situation that quickly gets out of hand, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair provides a richer psychological insight through which the viewers can relate to her subsequent choices and motives.

The extended anime segment also positions O-Ren differently in the grander scheme of the plot. While the storyline of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair stays centered around The Bride's mission, the new material intensifies the emotional implications of O-Ren’s journey and turns the later fight between The Bride and O-Ren into a sadder one.

This move brings the character in line with the motifs of Tarantino’s later works, especially his revisionist approach to storytelling. The added sequence also helps to a bigger discussion on how Tarantino utilizes genre; he not only pays homage to Kite, Ghost in the Shell, and Blood: The Last Vampire by being inspired from them but also by incorporating direct visual references to Production I.G’s previous works.

Besides modifying the film, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is also a reason for a close look at the possible future of Tarantino. The director has said many times that he will stop making films after his 10th feature, but the reaction to the extended anime sequence has caused people to think that he should keep working in this field without breaking his own rule.

So, people are talking more and more about the idea of a Kill Bill anime, which could either be a series focused on O-Ren or an anthology exploring different characters, especially since Tarantino is also rumored to be interested in turning his unfilmed projects, like stories about Bill, Pai Mei, and the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, into films.

By the time the full version of the film is set to come out in December 2025, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair will not only represent Tarantino’s original vision in its entirety but also serve as a means of expanding the world beyond live-action storytelling.
