Wicked: For Good has stormed the box office surpassing the first installment, Wicked (2024), which earned approximately $120 million during its opening weekend. The sequel’s performance is particularly striking when competed against other massive theatrical events of 2025.

Notably, the $226 million haul positioned the film as the fourth-best Hollywood debut of the year, ranking just behind box office hits like Disney’s Lilo & Stitch ($341 million), Jurassic World Rebirth ($322 million), and A Minecraft Movie ($313 million). It also soared past other major releases of 2025 such as Superman ($220 million) and The Fantastic Four ($218 million).

Wicked: For Good also secured its place as the fifth-largest start for a musical of all time, trailing only massive animated or CGI adaptations: 2019’s The Lion King ($433 million), Moana 2 ($389 million), Frozen 2 ($358.4 million), and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast ($357 million).

Jim Orr, the head of domestic distribution for Universal, highlighted the film's performance as "fantastic" in terms of box office receipts. He stated:

“The results are just fantastic. Some films can deliver a false positive when tickets go on sale early but these results speak for themselves.”

Beyond Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the film features a talented ensemble including Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Colman Domingo as the voice of the cowardly lion, among other cast and characters.

The film picks up the following Elphaba’s discovery of the Wizard’s corruption and her subsequent escape from the Emerald City. Now labeled a dangerous public enemy by Madame Morrible, Elphaba fully embraces her identity as "wicked," desperately trying to evade capture while fighting to protect the Animals of Oz, whose rights are systematically being stripped away.

Meanwhile, Glinda, reluctantly accepting a role as the Wizard’s official public figure, is forced to choose between political compliance and loyalty to her friend. Adapted from the second act of Stephen Schwartz and Holzman's 2003 stage musical, the film's event are set before and during the events of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
