"Everyone asked, would he be in the Fast mythology… I gotta tell you he is a real one. We wrote a role for him…"

The Fast & Furious franchise, which began with the first film in 2009, has eleven films so far: ten main series movies (ending with Fast X) and one spin-off movie, Hobbs & Shaw. The upcoming installment in the film series is reportedly going to be the final one in the saga.

The news of Cristiano Ronaldo's involvement in the franchise comes after Diesel's last year announcement that a final film in the saga will return the series to where it all started. The actor posted a picture of himself and Jordana Brewster on his Instagram with the caption that reads:

"Last week, during the fires that displaced LA… my sister Jordana reached out to me and said… Please have Universal film the rest of Fast X Part 2 in LA. Los Angeles needs it now more than ever… Los Angeles is where Fast and Furious started filming 25 years ago… and now Fast will finally return home. All love…"

The Fast & Furious franchise has grown into one of the biggest action film series in history, starting from films which centered on illegal street racing and evolving into adventures that blend heists and espionage.

The initial four films, starting with The Fast and the Furious (2001) and concluding with Fast & Furious (2009), mostly centered around his speed chases, focusing on the rivalry and eventual bond between street racer Dominic "Dom" Toretto and undercover cop Brian O'Conner.

The narrative took a major turn with Fast Five (2011), the film that transitioned the series away from simple racing to a thrilling heist and spy genre. Since Fast Five, the series has delivered five sequels, including the most recent, Fast X (2023), featuring increasingly over-the-top stunts, impossible action sequences, and battles against international criminals and terrorists.

The heart of the saga is its ensemble cast, the "family" that Dom Toretto fiercely protects. Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner anchor the series, with other key members like Michelle Rodriguez (Letty Ortiz), Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto), Tyrese Gibson (Roman Pearce), and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges (Tej Parker) becoming mainstays.

Walker, who helmed the initial films in the franchise, tragically died in a car crash before the release of the seventh film, Furious 7 (2015). The filmmakers handled his final scenes with great care, using body doubles (including his brothers) and CGI to give his character a heartfelt and fitting retirement from the action, allowing his "family" bond with Dom to remain central to the series.

Universal Pictures has strategically expanded the Fast & Furious universe beyond the main film series. This expansion includes the highly successful 2019 spin-off movie, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which paired the characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

It also expanded into other media, such as the animated streaming television series, Fast & Furious Spy Racers (2019 - 2021) from DreamWorks Animation, which ran for six seasons and followed a new generation of racers. The main series also has two short films that tie into the overall story.

This successful evolution and expansion have cemented the Fast & Furious franchise as a commercial giant. It stands as Universal’s biggest franchise and one of the highest-grossing film series of all time, having earned a combined gross of over $7 billion worldwide.
