Shrek 5 will feature Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo as Shrek and Fiona's son in the upcoming installment in the franchise. This comes after the February 2025 announcement when Zendaya was revealed to feature in the film, voicing Felicia, Shrek and Fiona's daughter.

The production timeline for Shrek 5, officially confirmed over a decade after the last installment in the franchise, Shrek Forever After (2010), has been a story of prolonged development, strategic casting returns, and release date adjustments.

The serious talk about bringing the franchise back started after Universal bought DreamWorks. This led to Illumination’s CEO, Chris Meledandri, stepping in to help oversee things. In April 2023, Meledandri publicly announced that they were officially working on the fifth Shrek film, along with a Donkey spin-off, finally kicking the production into high gear.

Meledandri was very direct about trying to get Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) to return. The film officially began production in 2024 when the voice recording began in the first half of the year. This was confirmed by Murphy, who stated that he’d already "recorded the first act."

The only real snag has been the constant changes to the movie's release date. It was initially planned for a premiere on July 1, 2026. Later, it got shifted to a Christmas release on December 23, 2026. Then, in August 2025, the studio announced yet another, bigger delay, pushing the film for June 30, 2027 release.

Shrek became one of the most commercially dominant animated franchises globally, with four films generating more than $2.9 billion in worldwide box office receipts. This commercial success, beginning with the first film in 2001, extended far beyond the cinema, inspiring a vast range of profitable spin-offs and adaptations.

The upcoming addition in the animated franchise will be directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn. Vernon, who previously directed Shrek 2 and Madagascar 2, is also famous for voicing the Gingerbread Man (Gingy). Dohrn has a long history with the series, having worked as a writer and artist on the second and third films, and serving as the head of story on the fourth film.

Set for a release on June 30, 2027, the film is being produced by Gina Shay, who previously produced Shrek Forever After, and by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.
