The film's trailer showcases the toys reacting with visible fear (Slinky Dog shaking, Rex's teeth chattering) when the package containing the new device arrives. The trailer also confirms the return of Woody, despite his farewell to the group at the end of Toy Story 4. Pixar's Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, previously hinted that Woody is "called back to help" his friends, who are struggling to remain relevant in a world dominated by Lilypad.During a presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Docter explained that Woody is called back because the other toys, particularly Jessie, struggle to handle the new technological threat. During the June 5, 2025 presentation, Docter decribed Lily as:"It's a new tech tablet, which allows Bonnie to chat with their friends and play games and other things too. But Lily can also be a bit sneaky and prickly to be around. And because, in her mind, it's a lot better to be socialized, and Bonnie needs to move on from toys."Toy Story 5 significantly differs from previous films in the franchise by pivoting the conflict from toy-on-toy rivalry or the threat of disposal to the existential challenge posed by modern technology. The original film centered on Woody's jealousy over Buzz, a newer, high-tech action figure. Subsequent films explored themes of abandonment and finding purpose in a changing world. The Toy Story franchise became one of the most successful animated franchise's in the film industry with a total box office receipts of over $3 billion worldwide. The third and fourth installments gained significant box office success, with both films surpassing the $1 billion mark globally. Toy Story 3 ($1.067 billion) was the first animated film to hit that milestone, with Toy Story 4 ($1.073 billion) slightly outgrossing it, making both films among the top 50 highest-grossing films of all time. The upcoming sequel in the franchise, Toy Story 5, will hit the theaters on June 19, 2026.Stay tuned for more updates.
