Following the critical success of their last feature, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the filmmaking duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley is teaming up to develop and direct a new Star Trek movie for Paramount Pictures.
The film will reportedly be a completely new take on the Star Trek universe, disconnected from any prior movies or current TV series. Beyond their work in D&D, Goldstein and Daley are well-known for writing the witty screenplay for Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming and for co-writing and directing the highly praised dark comedy Game Night.
From Spider-Man: Homecoming and D&D to the final frontier: Goldstein and Daley tapped for the new Star Trek movie

Paramount is reportedly tasking Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to write and direct a new Star Trek movie that will be a completely new take on the Star Trek universe, operating independently and disconnected from the previous Kelvin timeline films (which starred Chris Pine, who also led the duo’s Dungeons & Dragons movie) and all current television series.
The Star Trek franchise itself came to be through the vision of creator Gene Roddenberry, premiering in 1966 with the original series. Roddenberry conceived of a future where humanity had overcome its internal conflicts, focusing on the philosophical ideals of exploration, diversity, and optimism.
Due to poor ratings, the first series was canceled after three seasons, but its devoted fan base, later known as "Trekkies", kept the idea alive and ultimately contributed to its resurrection.
Since its inception, Star Trek has produced a total of 13 theatrical feature films, spanning four major eras: the six films starring the original cast (ending with The Undiscovered Country), the four films featuring The Next Generation cast, and the three reboot films directed by J.J. Abrams and his successors.
These movies are backed by more than a dozen television shows, such as Strange New Worlds and The Next Generation, which have cemented the franchise's popularity. Owing to the franchise's popularity, the new Star Trek movie, which is to be directed by Goldstein and Daley, is thus creating a significant buzz.
The duo’s involvement is a clear strategic move by Paramount Pictures, the film’s distributor, given their strong ties to the studio; Goldstein and Daley successfully delivered the critically acclaimed hit Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves for Paramount, making them the top choice to revive this major cinematic sci-fi franchise.
However, an official release date, cast, and other details for this project are yet to be revealed.
Stay tuned for more updates on the new Star Trek movie.
