Netflix’s upcoming animated feature Steps is putting a refreshing twist on one of the world’s most familiar fairy tales by shifting the spotlight away from Cinderella and onto the two characters history has rarely treated kindly: her stepsisters.

Slated for release in 2026, the film reimagines the so-called “wicked” siblings not as stock villains, but as flawed, funny, and deeply human young women trying to find their place in a story that was never written for them.

Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, Netflix's Steps follows Lilith (voiced by Ali Wong), the misunderstood stepsister, who is wrongly blamed for hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand. She accidentally turns her sister, Margot (voiced by Stephanie Hsu), into a frog.

Netflix's upcoming animated movie, Steps, is a reimagining classic Cinderella story, turning the spotlight away from Cinderella and onto her often misunderstood stepsisters. It tells a story about sisterhood, mistakes, and finding your own happy ending.

In the film, the Golden Globe recipient Ali Wong voices the central, misunderstood sister, Lilith, and the Everything Everywhere All at Once star Stephanie Hsu voices the sister who gets turned into a frog, Margot.

The movie’s directors have said the story is deeply personal, focusing on two different sisters finding common ground and dealing with the feeling of being an outsider. Steps director Tzue stated:

“This story is, at its core, about two very different sisters — one who fits perfectly into this fairy tale kingdom and one who doesn’t — realizing they’re more alike than different. It’s such a personal story for me because, growing up as an awkward, artsy Taiwanese kid in suburban New Jersey, I often felt like an outsider, like ‘happily ever after’ wasn’t meant for me. I wanted to create a film for everyone who has ever felt like they didn’t belong — and show how a single act of kindness can change everything.”

Meanwhile, director John Ripa said:

“It’s like nothing else I’ve worked on in my 30-year career in animation. Steps also has an incredible first-time filmmaker in Alyce Tzue, who brings a totally unique voice and point of view. She’s championed this story about belonging that I’ve found to be both resonant and inspirational, and I feel privileged to be by her side on this journey.”

The Cinderella story is one of the most famous fairytales in the world, with origins that are extremely old. The most famous written version is by Charles Perrault (1697), who introduced the iconic magical elements: the Fairy Godmother, the pumpkin carriage, and the glass slippers.

The character first debuted in Disney's animated musical film, Cinderella, on February 15, 1950. It was a massive box-office success based on Perrault's fairytale, saving the studio from financial trouble after World War II.
