Based on the Early Modern English ballad, Robin Hood's Death, the film adaptation promises to strip away the polished folklore of Sherwood Forest, presenting a rugged, "monstrous" version of the iconic outlaw grappling with his violent past and the burden of his own myth.

Hugh Jackman leads the cast of The Death of Robin Hood, embodying Robin Hood in a weathered, wildman appearance in a recently unveiled first look at the heroic outlaw. Joining him is Bill Skarsgård, who portrays a hardened version of Little John, once a protégé of Robin and now a man with a vastly different perspective on their shared history.

In the first reveal, Jackman’s Robin Hood is an aging man covered in the physical and emotional scars of a life lived outside the law. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the role and the film's script, the Deadpool & Wolverine star said:

"What I love so much about Mike’s vision of Robin Hood is that the script delivered power, and it examines how power can be used for good or bad. Robin Hood is a real man in our story. With all the scars, the pain, the regret, and yes, the love. Mike’s story has weight to it. For me, it’s beautiful and human."

Michael Sarnoski's The Death of Robin Hood is based on the oldest legends and folk songs about the famous archer. Most people know Robin Hood as a hero who "steals from the rich and gives to the poor," but this film looks at a much darker side of the story.

It specifically follows a very old poem called Robin Hood's Death. In this version, an older Robin is tired and badly hurt. Instead of a happy ending with his Merry Men, he is at the end of his life, dealing with the violent things he did in the past. It shows him as a real, "human" man rather than just a perfect legend.

The Death of Robin Hood is currently in post-production phase after filming wrapped up during late March 2025 on Northern Ireland. Sarnoski recently shared that the movie was shot on 35mm film to give it a raw, epic feel. He stated:

"There's a charge that it gives you — we're burning film right now, this is the real deal. There's something about being in real epic, scopey locations, shooting on film that feels like you're capturing something."

Distributed by A24, the film is scheduled for a release on 2026. Dates are yet to be revealed.
