Damian McCarthy’s folk-horror film, Hokum, starring Adam Scott, is slated for release in theaters on May 1, 2026. Scott plays reclusive novelist Ohm Bauman, who travels to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes.
There, he hears tales of an ancient witch haunting the suite. The unsettling stories soon lead to disturbing visions and a dark confrontation with his own past. The cast also includes Peter Coonan and David Wilmot.
The recently released teaser trailer of Hokum shows Adam Scott’s character in the dark, woodsy setting of the remote inn. It shows a close-up image of a ghostly figure wearing a chilling, donkey-like mask, suggesting the physical form of the evil entity.
Damian McCarthy’s Hokum trailer, cast details and more
The recently released trailer for Damian McCarthy’s upcoming supernatural horror film Hokum is a brief, 41-second clip features no dialogue. A simple, chilling voice-over is heard over the haunting imagery and flashes of several images. The background narrator says:
“Long long ago, deep in the woods, there lived... a witch”
Adam Scott leads the cast as Ohm Bauman, a novelist drawn into a frightening mystery. Scott is best known today for his Emmy-nominated role as Mark Scout in the psychological thriller series Severance, where he expertly played a man whose work life is surgically separated from his home life.
He was widely popular for his performance as the nerdy, calzone-loving state auditor Ben Wyatt in the sitcom Parks and Recreation. Scott also appeared as Ed Mackenzie in the series Big Little Lies.
Hokum supporting cast features Peter Coonan and David Wilmot, who are expected to play key roles in the remote Irish inn where the story takes place. Other confirmed cast members rounding out the ensemble for this horror film are Florence Ordesh, Will O’Connell, and Michael Patric.
In August 2025, the distribution company Neon secured the global rights for the film, meaning they will handle its theatrical release worldwide. This deal was finalized with Neon managing international sales at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Hokum was filmed on location in West Cork, Ireland, with principal photography taking place in early 2025. The project received co-production support from Screen Ireland (Fís Éireann). The production team includes Roy Lee and Steven Schneider from Spooky Pictures, Derek Dauchy from Image Nation Abu Dhabi, and Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde from Tailored Films.
The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on May 1, 2026.
