The film achieved historic success, delivering the biggest global opening for an animated film ever with an estimated $556 million worldwide. This record-shattering five-day debut secured its position as the fourth-highest global opening of all time for any Hollywood movie. Notably, it also became the highest-grossing imported animated film ever in the vital Chinese market.

Zootopia 2 features the return of its main voice cast, with Ginnifer Goodwin reprising her role as Officer Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as her cynical and charming partner, Officer Nick Wilde. The plot picks up the pace when they chase after a mysterious reptile resident, Gary D'Snake (voiced by Ke Huy Quan).

Zootopia 2 in its opening weekend delivered a historic box office performance, establishing multiple significant records across global, international, and specific market categories, according to analysis compiled from various authoritative trade reports.

1) Global Box Office

The film's $556 million during its five-day holiday opening framed it as the biggest global opening of all time for any animated motion picture. Furthermore, this result positioned the film as the fourth-highest global opening weekend ever recorded for any film, placing it in the company of historical blockbusters like Marvel's Avengers: Endgame.

Among releases for the current year, the sequel’s performance ranked as the biggest worldwide debut of 2025. For its parent company, the film achieved the highest global opening ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios. Its success also made it the second-biggest global opening for a Hollywood film since the start of the pandemic, surpassed only by Spider-Man: No Way Home.

2) International and China Market Dominance

The film’s global total was largely fueled by its international run, which amassed approximately $400 million. This total secured the record for the highest international animated opening ever.

The most consequential factor in this success was the performance in China, where Zootopia 2 became the highest-grossing international animated film ever released in the country.

Its $272 million gross in China also earned the designation of the second-largest opening weekend for a non-local film of all time in that territory, behind only Avengers: Endgame. Additionally, the film broke the Chinese record for the biggest single-day total for a Hollywood production.

3) North American market and other records

In the North American domestic market, Zootopia 2 achieved a five-day Thanksgiving gross of $156 million, securing its place as the second-biggest Thanksgiving opening in domestic box office history. In specialized theatrical formats, the film set a new record for the biggest global animated launch in IMAX history, contributing to IMAX’s most successful Thanksgiving weekend ever.

Notably, Zootopia 2 achieved the largest percentage increase in opening weekend gross from an original film to its sequel for any animated franchise in history, marking a monumental 239% jump over the 2016 original. With this, it surpassed the previous record holder, Disney’s own Moana 2 (2024), which had set the benchmark with an impressive global opening of approximately $389.3 million.
