The film is helmed by the Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, known for his work on the Broadway hit Hamilton. It is a faithful reimagining of the original's story, bringing the Polynesian mythology and vibrant world to life with a fresh perspective.

The wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson is reprising his role as Maui, the demigod he voiced in the animated films Moana (2016) and Moana 2 (2024). Johnson shared how important and deeply personal it is for him to play the demigod in the franchise. The Smashing Machine star stated:
"This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me."
Transitioning from his wrestling career as "The Rock," Dwayne Johnson made his cinematic debut in 2001 with a supporting role as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns.
This led to his first leading role in the 2002 spin-off, The Scorpion King. Johnson's career reached new heights with his inclusion in the Fast & Furious franchise, beginning with his breakthrough role as the relentless agent Luke Hobbs in Fast Five (2011). He has since become a global box-office powerhouse, leading successful family blockbusters like the Jumanji reboot series.

Catherine Laga'aia will portray the titular character in the upcoming Moana live-action film. Before this, Catherine appeared in the Amazon Prime Video series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, appearing in three episodes as Young Candy. Her casting as Moana marks her career's first lead film.
An Australian actress of Samoan heritage, Laga'aia expressed how honored she felt in portraying Moana. She stated:
“I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.
Besides Johnson and Catherine Laga'aia, the film features John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen in supporting roles. The full cast list of the upcoming live-action is still awaited as of now. The film will hit the theatres on July 10, 2026.
