Former Spain and Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique's suggestions to improve tennis were mocked ruthlessly by fans. During his recent appearance on a podcast, the retired footballer pitched some ideas which he felt could transform tennis for good.Pique suggested getting rid of the second serve. He didn't want players to engage in long deuce games either. He felt that a 'golden point' to decide the outcome of a game would be more interesting to watch rather than multiple deuce games."Cancel the two serve attempts in tennis and make it one and cancel Deuce and make it a golden point. people don't want to watch the player bouncing the ball and playing repeated serves," Pique said (translated from Spanish).Pique's suggestions certainly didn't sit well with tennis fans, who criticized him for his absurd opinion. Fans flocked to X (formerly Twitter) to express their views regarding Pique's ideas:"Just make soccer games shootouts. No one wants to watch players walk around and not score all game," wrote one fan."Bro played a game where dudes lie on the ground, faking injuries, to waste time," wrote another fan."This is the guy that ruined the Davis Cup, isn’t it?" chimed in another fan."What a clown indeed," wrote one fan."Stick to your retirement and cheating on Shakira," expressed a fan."This d guy that cheated on Shakira, his opinions r irrelavnt," said one fan."Why we let this washed up defender talk about tennis," wrote another fan."Dont tell him to stick to football either, this Don has been chatting nonsense since retirement," wrote a fan."Evil," chimed another fan.Pique's standing among the tennis community was already on shaky ground, thanks to his tinkering with the format of the Davis Cup. His latest ideas haven't endeared him to the fans of the sport in any manner whatsoever.Gerard Pique has been heavily criticized for changing the Davis Cup formatGerard Pique (middle) at the Davis Cup 2019. The atmosphere during the matches was incredible to witness, especially during the finals. However, all that changed when Gerard Pique-led Kosmos took over the handling of the Davis Cup starting from 2018. The idea was to increase the popularity of the tournament. One of the biggest changes of the revamped format was the reduction of the matches to best-of-three sets from the original best-of-five sets. The ITF wasn't impressed with these changes, and the 25-year deal with Kosmos concluded after five years in 2023. Despite the end of their partnership, the new format remains in place. Pique still has to bear the brunt of this decision, with fans criticizing him like clockwork when the Davis Cup is taking place.
