Andy Roddick and Chris Eubanks have hit back at Alexander Zverev's constant criticism on tour. The former players had a heated discussion about his unfair treatment over the past few years.
Zverev has had a good season in 2025, amassing 55 wins from 80 matches, including a title-winning run in Munich. He also secured runner-up finishes in Vienna, Stuttgart, and Melbourne.
Roddick, who won the US Open in 2003, felt Zverev is still one of the best players on tour. He said the German shouldn’t be judged according to the standards set by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
"Listen, you might not be a fan of Sasha for reasons and things that have happened off court, or whatever it might be, but there have been people on, you know, different podcasts and different things, who are like, they're like, they treat a guy like he's not a great player. And that pisses me off," Andy Roddick said on the Served podcast (Time 35:00)
"You talk about 24 titles? He's made World Tour Finals every year that he hasn't been hurt for the last nine years. There are not a lot of people who have made World Tour Finals eight times. Because Carlos and Jannik are so good, I don't ever, ever, ever want to get to the place where anyone who's not them is treated like a piece of shit. Like, that's ridiculous," he added
Alexander Zverev has yet to win his first Grand Slam on the ATP Tour. He reached the final of the 2024 French Open but couldn't make his mark against Carlos Alcaraz.
The 28-year-old also delivered a strong performance at the Australian Open this year, but Jannik Sinner stood in his way in the final. The Italian defeated him in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3.
"I'm so angry, that's one of the best backhands we've ever seen" - Christopher Eubanks joins Andy Roddick to defend Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev held on to his third spot in the ATP Rankings this year, maintaining a lead of nearly 400 points over Novak Djokovic and 900 points over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Former player Christopher Eubanks joined Roddick in defending Zverev from the criticism he has faced in recent years. He felt the German receives a lot of flak for his off-court incidents and personality.
"I think a lot of this analysis we hear about Alexander Zverev's tennis stems from people's belief or their feelings about him off the court. But strictly, If we're talking tennis, it was someone on a pod who tried to drive home the point that and quote him like, 'He's just not that good. I watch him, and he's just not that good.' And I'm looking, and I'm so angry. What are you talking about? The guy's 6'7", usually serves around 75-80% per serve, averaging 135 miles an hour," Christopher Eubanks said
The former World No. 29 also felt that Zverev has one of the best backhands on tour. He credited the German for moving effortlessly around the court.
"That's one of the best backhands we've ever seen. Actually, I mean, yeah, we can say that there are guys before him, big guys. But he was kinda one of the first big guys to be an exceptional mover. I felt like before him, there would be big guys who we'd say moves well for a big guy. That guy moves well for a big guy," he added
Zverev is back in action this week at the Davis Cup Finals. He will take on Argentina's Francisco Cerúndolo in the quarterfinals on November 20, 2025.
